SA Champs Vic Bay 2012

SA Longboard Champs took place in the perfect location of Vic Bay this year.
Day 1 started off with really fun 2 to 3 foot waves offering perfect noseriding conditions, one particular nose ride by Nikki Tricket earned her a well deserved 10 point ride, the first one of the contest!
As the event progressed there were talks of a huge swell arriving by the final day. Sure enough we were woken up by the rumbling of the ocean on Saturday morning and 8 to 10 foot sets rolling in.
After much debate contest director Bryan Salter decided to send out the Open Repercharge. The jump off to get into the line-up had to be perfectly timed or else you could spend the rest of your heat paddling and pushing under. There were some bombs coming through with each province shouting and whistling from the rocks as one of their team mates dared to take the drop.
Every one held their breath when about 20 minutes into the heat the biggest set of the day rolled in on the horizon. Brad Weare was left by himself at the backline where he got drilled wave after wave until he finally ended up on the beach. That was when the decision was made to put the contest on hold with hopes of the swell dropping.
The action resumed at 10h00 with some solid sets still pulling in.
It was amazing as every individual from ages 13 to 65 braved the conditions and decided to paddle out.
With a total of 9 boards being broken on the final day and countless epic rides it was an incredible end to a wave-filled week in Vic Bay!

Sporting Chance

Today I visited a few of the Sporting Chance clinics around Cape Town and spoke to the kids about what it takes to be a successful sportsperson.
It was a great experience meeting with all the kids aswell as the coaches who are very passionate and driven in what they do.
Sporting Chance is an initiative that brings people together from all different walks of life by allowing them the opportunity to participate in all types of sports.
Sporting Chances philosophy is to "get children off the streets, away from their computer games and TVs and instill in them, a love of sport"
Over the years, Sporting Chance has helped to develop some of South Africa's most promising sportspeople.
I'm really stoked to be part of such a great initiative and look forward to being more involved with the Sporting Chance team in the future.

Shark???

This picture was taken by my friend Mike "Langer" Malan a couple of months ago and created alot of debate as to whether it was a great white or just an illusion in the water? They recently uploaded the picture onto local surf website ZIGZAG where shark expert Brandon Kilbride confirms that it was indeed a great white!
Luck was definitely on your side Langer, I guess that after the Jonny saw how long you were he went back to Seal Island to call some mates;-)

World Paddleboard Games 2012 Lima Peru
Team SA just returned back from the first ever world stand up paddleboard championships! The event took place in Lima Peru at a beach called La Pamilla. The wave was a soft and fun little right hander, perfect for paddleboarding. The water was warm and the the vibe amongst the 17 different countries on the beach was amazing!
After the 7 days of competition in perfect conditions for both wave riding aswell as SUP races and prone paddleboard races, team SA finished with a Bronze medal overall. A great result for the first ISA paddleboard event!
Thanks to both Gary “Inca” van Rooyen (coach) and Bruce Tedder (manager) for all their hard work and helping us to achieve everything we did!
We are all excited to make the team again next year and do better by taking out team Australia and achieving GOLD!
